Local Airports

There are several airports located in the Greater Boston area. Unfortunately, few of these airports can be accessed using public transportation. Driving times range from 30 minutes to an hour.

BEVERLY AIRPORT (KBVY)

Several FBOs make their home at Beverly. A controlled airport, Beverly is about 40 minutes northeast of Boston.

HANSCOM FIELD (KBED)

Hanscom Field is home to two fixed-based operators (FBOs) offering instructional and rental services: East Coast Aero Club and Executive Flyers. While the airport is one of the busiest in New England, it is the only local airport that can be accessed via public transportation (Take the #76 from Alewife).

LAWRENCE AIRPORT (KLWM)

Lawrence Airport is located roughly 30-45 minutes north of Boston, just short of the New Hampshire border. Lawrence is home to Joe’s Landing Cafe, which serves both American and Middle Eastern food, and the Hawk Flying Club.

NORWOOD AIRPORT (KOWD)

Norwood Airport is located about 25 miles southwest of Boston. Planes can be rented from either A.D.S. Flight or the Norwood Flight Center.

STERLING AIRPORT (3B3)

One of the cheapest places to fly in the Boston area, with Cessna 152s starting at $56/hour, Sterling Airport is home to both the Greater Boston Soaring Club and the FBO Sterling Air Inc. For those interested in lessons, contact Sean Brodeur at 978-422-8860. Tailwheel instruction is also available at this airport.

Aircraft Rentals with Tech Flight Corporationorts

Flying can be an expensive hobby. The MIT Flying Club works to provide members with access to amazing resources that can help defray the costs of flying (be it for pleasure, working towards a certification, rating or license, fly-outs, rentals, and more), making your dreams to soar a reality.

Aircraft rentals are currently unavailable as of December 2024, but the MITFC president, Grayson Bertaina, is working hard to have an aircraft available again during Spring 2025/TBD.

Founded by MIT alumni, Tech Flight Corporation is a 501(c)(3) charitable entity that owned and operated a Cessna 150 aircraft for flight training to club members, “at cost,” from the Beverly Airport (KBVY). Rentals are typically sold in blocks of 10 hours at $85/hour (wet, tach) for club members. Compared to most other airports that rent at around $110+ per hour (including gas + oil) this option is much more economical. All pilots are required to fly with an approved CFI for checkout or as student pilots.

If you are a MITFC member and are interested in learning to fly or renting the Cessna 150, please reach out to Ted Acworth at acworth@gmail.com.

Please consider supporting student flight training! Contact an MIT Flying Club executive (flying-exec@mit.edu) or Grayson Bertaina (graysonb@mit.edu) to make a tax-deductible charitable contribution. We’re seeking funding to buy a new plane for Spring 2025/TBD, underwrite affordable flight training, and provide training scholarships.
